Jackson-Hodges discusses her family, growing up in Brusly, and attending segregated schools in Brusly and Cohn High School in Port Allen. She primarily discusses attending Brusly High School in 1966, including her academic work and reception by white students, teachers, and policemen. Jackson-Hodges also describes her attendance at Southern University and teaching in a middle school for the Stockton Unified School District.

Evanna Jackson-Hodges was born in Brusly, La., in 1948 to Evanna and Ferman Jackson. After attending segregated schools through the eleventh grade, Jackson-Hodges enrolled in the integrated Brusly Public School System. She was the only African American to attend Brusly High School in 1966. Jackson-Hodges graduted from Southern University in 1970.
